BIODIVERSITY

As the largest tract of tropical rainforest in the Americas, the Amazonian rainforest boasts unparalleled biodiversity. More than 1/3 of all species recorded in the world are found in the Amazon basin, constituting the largest collection of living plant and animal species in the world.

One in five of all the birds recorded in the world live in this extraordinary habitat. It has been estimated that many hundred of million species are yet to be discovered. It also contains 3000 species of fresh water fish and holds the largest freshwater fish in the world, the Paiche or Arapaima, attaining a length of up to 16 feet. Dolphins, pink and grey, sting rays, manatees, giant otters are usually found in the tributaries and main rivers.
